چکیده

It has been shown that English speakers (from non-New Zealand backgrounds) use initial stress as a word boundary cue in the segmentation of continuous speech [1]. Research has also shown that Maori English is significantly more syllabletimed than Pakeha English [2]. New Zealanders have exposure to both Maori and Pakeha English. We ask whether they use different segmentation strategies when they are listening to speakers with different dialect features. More precisely, we question whether a) New Zealand English speakers use the same segmentation strategies as speakers of other varieties of English, and b) whether New Zealanders segment words in continuous speech in these ethnolects differently. To answer these questions, an artificial language learning paradigm was used, based on [1].

Word segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour

Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Effects of the Native Language on the Learning of Fundamental Frequency in Second-Language Speech Segmentation

This study investigates whether the learning of prosodic cues to word boundaries in speech segmentation is more difficult if the native and second/foreign languages (L1 and L2) have similar (though non-identical) prosodies than if they have markedly different prosodies (Prosodic-Learning Interference Hypothesis). It does so by comparing French, Korean, and English listeners' use of fundamental-...

Differential Contribution of Prosodic Cues in Native and Non-native Speech Segmentation

The present study investigates the contribution of fundamental frequency (F0) in native English and native French listeners‟ segmentation of French speech. The results of a word-monitoring task with resynthesized stimuli show that pitch accents modulated speech segmentation for both groups, but unlike native listeners, the English listeners, who were at mid and high proficiencies in French, wer...

L1/L2 Perception of Lexical Stress with F0 Peak-Delay: Effect of an Extra Syllable Added

This study addressed the problems of our previous study [5] and investigated the perceptual effect of F0 peak-delay on L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress. A trisyllabic English nonsense word ‘ninini’ /nInInI/ whose F0 was set to reach its peak around the second syllable was embedded in a frame sentence and used as the stimulus of the perceptual experiment. Native English and Japanese ...

The effect of F0 peak-delay on the L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress

This study investigated the perceptual effect of F0 peakdelay on L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress. A bisyllabic English non-word ‘nini’ /nInI/ whose F0 was set to reach its peak in the second syllable was embedded in a frame sentence and used as the stimulus of the perceptual experiment. Native English and Japanese speakers were asked to determine lexical stress locations in the exp...
